Oh, Come On..
'Did the best team win today? I don't think so. I cannot wish Liverpool luck in the final.'
-JOSE MOURINHO, Chelsea manager
NO CHANCE
'Over 40 matches, no chance.'
-MOURINHO, on Liverpool's chances of winning the Premiership next season
NOTHING WRONG
'I don't think it was a mistake. Ferreira was one of the best players.'
-MOURINHO, on fielding defender Paulo Ferreira in right midfield
REFEREE'S FAULT
'When the referee gives such an important decision 70m from the ball, it doesn't smell good.' >
-MOURINHO, on referee Graham Poll, who gave a free kick for John Terry's raised boot, leading to John Arne Riise's opening goal
MY PLAYERS' FAULT
'In semi-finals, in big matches, you cannot miss big chances and we missed two today. It hurts.'

A magnificent piece of work. He goes around interviewing expert cosmologists, physicists and astronomers in his quest for the compatiblity between Science and Faith. Much as we would have thought that Darwinism wiped out the need for a Creator, science is making so much progress now that it points towards a Creator of this earth rather than away from it. Much controversy over Darwinism and the creation of ideas to support the theory too. Atheist-turned-believer Lee Strobel's amazing story and insatiable appetite for the truth. A must read.
He interviewed 2 expert astronomers (Richards and Gonzalez) who came to the conclusion that the universe is so fine-tuned that a Grand Designer had to be behind it. Build upon case by case, fact by fact, his case is pretty compelling so far. In this section of the book, Lee and his 2 guests discuss the astronomical findings of today and how they support (or do not support) the case for a creator. And they do! The earth has been so fine-tuned geographically that it warrants strong evidence for a grand designer. I particularly liked this section of his interview where Gonzalez, PhD, co-author of The Privileged Planet, spoke on his experiences with the beautiful world and the power of an eclipse.
Gonzalez concludes:
"...that the universe was designed for observers living in places where they can make scientific discoveries"... "There may be other purposes to the universe, but at least we know that scientific discovery was one of them"Lee concludes the chapter:
Ever the theologian, Richards jumped back in. "In the Christian tradition, this is quite at home," he said. "Christians have always believed that God testifies to his existence through the book of nature and the book of Scripture. In the 19th century, science effectively closed the book of nature. But now, new scientific discoveries are reopening it."
"But if the universe was designed with us in mind, why is it so incredibily vast?" I asked. "There's a lot of empty space out there. Isn't that wasteful and unnecessary?"
"Because the universe was designed for discovery, we need something to discover," Richards replied. "The universe is vast adn we're small, but we have access to it. That's what is amazing. We can see background radiation that has come from more that ten billion light years away."
"Plus," added Gonzalez, "we needed supernovae to build up the heavy elements so life-bearing planets could develop. And one particular type of supernovae is incredibly useful as a 'standard candle'. Type 1a supernovae have 'calibratable limminosities' so we can use them to determine distances and to probe the expansion history of the universe. So, again, we see the connection between habitability and measurability."
Richards made one other interesting observation. "Darwin once complained that pollen couldn't have been designed. After all, he said, look at the waste! Millions upon millions of particles are produced, but very, very few are used in the development of flowers. However, what he didn't realize was that pollen is one of the most useful tools we have in the scientific exploration of the past, in part, because it can be dated through Carbon 14. When we find pollen in lake sediments and ice cores, we can use it to gauge how old the layered deposits are and what the ancient climate was like.
"Darwin only looked at pollen from a biological standpoint; when we look at the big picture, we see it has another use he never anticipated. Perhaps the same is true in many other instances throughout the universe."
If God so precisely and carefully and lovingly and amazingly constructed a mind-boggling habitat for his creatures, then it would be natural for him to want them to explore it, to measure it, to investigate it, to appreciate it, to be inspired by it-and ultimately, and most importantly, to find him through it.
I thought that was beautiful. =D. Can't wait to read on!

1 John 4: 17 Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world.Boldness, to claim every victory.
18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.

A beautiful Day

A fine day. Really good weather! Biked down to central for my religion class. Shiok. Collected my 1st prize for the Nutritional Health Quiz at Stockwell, thanks JeM! Gayle told me that 20 students had the right answers! Did you fill out 20 sheets? hahahaha... she told me it was weird. and they had to raffle the winners. Haha.. freaking funny. Anywayz, I got this sling bag thing.
Yupperz, hope it stays like this all the way till spring.
Cycled through the other side of Bonisteel on the way back and realized that there's a Ford Library (below)..and a whole side of the North we haven't been to yet.

jarhead
nostalgia. always happens. we all know what it's like being in the army. Pretty realistic.
The movie was about this watch from the Marine Corp and their training adventures and all, and them eventually going to fight in the Gulf War, living more than a hundred days out in the desert, patrols etc. Missing girlfriends, wives, parents, going crazy, and not firing their rifles in combat, not even once. They trained their lives with their rifle, and not even one shot fired. You'd think they'd be happy not to have engaged in combat. =) But they were not. It's like studying a whole year for your finals and not being able to take it. Hmm aiight that might not be a good analogy haha.
Anywayz, yea, things back home turn out different, yada yada. *blah*. I guess in some sense, that's how things turn out for each of us who passed out of NS. Haha... in some sense.
Hoo-ah!

woke up at 8am at Junrong's place this morning, and my lifeguard certification course was going to be at 8am! Thankfully Patrick (the instructor) came out of the Bell pool to check if I was going to be there (the CCRB was locked at that time). Made it at 8.10am, wore my wet trunks( from yesterday's session) and jumped into the pool to make an Active Drowning Victim Rescue, without warmup and all that. Haha..
O wells, glad I could go through all that with that busted knee. Shikes. I proclaim it healed!
On another note, last night was crazy. IOE Bar crawl (The Brown Jug) at 6pm, then Seniors' Day (for a while), then back to bar crawl (B-Dubs, Scorekeepers), and Andy's place for his rooftop party for the seniors. Man, that guy, tried to get all of us drunk. Haha.. thank God I stayed over at Mojo. Else I wouldn't be able to make the course on time. Thanks JR!
Dudes, now I know how fast a road bike can go. =) The reduced traction definitely helps in contributing to speed, and I could scale the slope to the NCRB pretty easily, even though it's pretty steep. Thanks Effrem, for riding all the way up north to help me change my tyre (yea, got a flat even before starting) . Next up, changing my brake cable and housing. =) and my roadie will look spanking new (i hope). Pity I left all my tools back home. argh. =) haha..feels good wearing my Gary Fisher's again. heh, at least I brought that pair of gloves. Wenz! Jason! Let's go la, when I'm back in Singapore again hahha... oops means I have to ship the bike back huh. Hmm
Anyhow, I completed my portion of eecs lab, and did almost all of math lab. =) Been procrastinating on E2K6 stuff--and so I finished it today.
Now all that's left is to work on the finals...
Grace, grace, and redemption from missing the mark.
