had a long talk with a friend yesterday...got me a lil frustrated. just trusting that all goes well...

Well anywayz, it's my first midterm for REL 122 in about an hours' time! Hope it goes well...

Came across some old photos yesterday...

Whoa...so long ago. rem this folks? =) scorpion...

The Younglings. *do i see aaron chow!*

Happy hour

almost there...

I miss my buddy!
Haha, just back from class. Done for the day. =)

Things to do:
1) Agenda for Engr 100 meeting tmw
2) Revise for my REL 122 midterm!
3) Prac Gateway for Math
4) Math written 13.7?

Hee. Yeah man.

Bought the tix to the Snowfall charity ball, and also bought a new 24 CD metal case for my photo CDs. =) haha and y'know what? I just realised that the cds my dad sent over are all copies of the original! Thanks dad! must have not wanted it to get lost on the way to Ann Arbor so made those copies.

Yup was going through the earliest photo cd i made and wow... man. memories.

Here are pictures of CNY 2002 to stir up those feelings of nostalgia:

the year of the dog

Hey Limz, what'd you mean 'regular decent updates'?=) haha i sense a tinge of sarcasm. =) Oh wells, happy CNY yeah!
Bursley-Baits! (with 2 mojos, an East Quad, and a lyold)
The gals + Aaron

And a Happy CNY to everyone too! This is actually the second time I am composing this post cos the first time I did, I was downloading photos from my camera at the same time and the bloody laptop hung. haha ..well here goes...
Jem, Chunyi (brudder!), me, val

Last night, was awesome. Kudos to the CNY committee! A blast, we had. A special thanks to all freshmen in the CNY committee--Christine, Selene, Valerie, Chin Wei and last but definitely not least, Tianhan for the awesome awesome hosting. Haha... you were a natural.
CScope Team

Okay we had a 1 hour socializing session right before the dinner, and then adjourned to the basement of Trotter House for an 8-course meal on an 8-man table. =) Haha...awesome stuff from TKWu. *cheers!* albeit a bit salty. (Someone's happy...) haha... then had the new SSA committee introduced, and then the basement became an underground gambling den (poker, texas hold 'em, blackjack, mahjong...) after they cleared up.

Err, Sel's STAPLE. not good.

Me, Ed, Jem, JR

eh friend!
EECS lab buddy!
The majority of the 120plus of us went upstairs to the Trotter House lounge for some good ol' karaoke... (kudos to youtube.com!=) ) Nice songs Val! and of course Chin our man.. The karaoke session took really long though, and we had a round of 4-D which became 3-D when no one got the 4 lucky numbers. hee. and guess what, the eventual winner of a 168 (yat-loke-fatt!) greenback money pot was......me! hahaha brought me back to the time in the casino at Monaco where I won 94.50 Euros at the slots. Haha wheeee~~~!
Hip Hop Heng!

Me and Mut
Sifu!
Winning Eleven competition was the last event of the day and by that time it was about 3.30-4-ish. Thanks to Sel we had a lift home ..slept at 4plus.. and I had to wake at 9 for church the next morning. *tired* haha. ..but I guess the CNY committee had it worse.. they slept only 6-ish.

Well, I must say today's been pretty productive, finishing math lab, eecs lab, eng100 homework and all... =) Oh and I completed the editing of the CScope email as well. All's left for me to do now are the religion readings., and study for that midterm. Will have to come up with the agenda for the eng100 meeting this tuesday too.

Yup had this interesting conversation with Junrong about the americans over here after math lab. You see, they aren't too different from us singaporeans too. Cos I was telling him that y'know, just thankful for a super zai onz ang moh in my Chem 125 lab team (Jonathan Price! ). That guy is so awesome. He isn't the stereotyped ang moh who parties all the time and doesn't study. He actually does! and he actually is mother-conscientious. Heh. So that's cool. Was telling junrong that it can be tiring if you're to be the one who's on the ball all the time. So it's refreshing for a change. Thankful that I have such an excellent lab partner. And of course there's the flip side of the coin. The hardcore-party-goers. Like the other lab partner I have who's in a frat and keeps a pet snake in his bag. (!!!!!!) serious! haha...

Well, it's the same, even in Singapore. As much as we would like to think we're all guai kias, there ARE the hardcore-vice-dudes too. hahaha... just that in America, the population is so huge that it seems a lot. Hmm mebbe because of the college culture as well actually. But the point being, there are Singaporeans who are hardworking, there are some who are not. Same with the college kids here. =) So who are we to say that they are lazy, whole-day-party etc...? It might be an over-generalization. =)

Yeah.. my take. :P Be blessed everyone!

Saturday, January 28, 2006

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, I bought a TI-89 Titanium brand new for 142 usd on amazon. hmm for those of you who don't know, that's actually a graphing calculator. Woo hoo! not that i'm particularly excited, but rather, cos I reckoned it'd be a worthwhile investment since i'm in the eecs department. Yup and it'd be easier to get polar coords and stuff from there. I should realy check out the cool functions.

On another note, i've just installed Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel in my comp. Yeah Ah Zheng! =) hahaha. .remember those days? I never got to complete the game. It probably is my second chance. haha...

oh well...chem 125 meeting at 530pm. I hope it's over quick. Then settle eecs lab 2, and then my engr100 and i'm ready for CNY!

oh yea, happy reunion dinners spore folks!

cheers!

dota

supposed to do readings....... -_-

*phew*

=) Finally. a breather. =) Woke up at 9am and did my EECS homework till 1pm. Felt good though, that I was able to figure it out by myself. Though it's only later that I find out that I was helluva careless. =)

Had work at IMSB last night. 9.30pm to 1am. Equipment Room. Waaa spent the entire time reading on spectrums and sinusoids. hehehe. was great. =)

BEFORE work, I spent slightly over an hour dancing at Angell Hall. Haha yes, =) got 'dragged' into dancing last night. Argentine Tango. =) haha. had quite a bit of fun 'walking with a pulse'. =) Sel said I was bouncing. Haha... quite hilarious la. cos i was kinda vertically challenged among all the ang-mohs. had a bit of trouble like holding them. Maybe I'll grow taller. :D Well anyway, we kinda like walked around quite a bit, then did this tango embrace thing. yeah , and that was it. I left a little earlier and ran to my workplace. Hmm..yep .. new experiences every day haha.

hmmm yeah, and I just finished my engr 100 device rating form. A piece off my mind. =) Gonna catch up on some NT reading tonight, mebbe start on engr100 assignment 2, then get some dota going on.

still havent replied to Nicole the IM Officials person. Told her i was available to help referee for field hockey on Sunday. Hmm still contemplating. Have to plan a Math Lab session on Sunday as well so wondering if I have the time. AND, my religion class midterm's coming up on Tuesday. Hmmm.. where the life flows .. =)

Alrighty... that's about as much going on in my life now. heh. will update soon!

Monday, January 23, 2006

Necto's on Saturday was fun.

My first time clubbing in Ann Arbor. =) heh. and boy, the clubbing scene here is 'hiong', man.

The hip hop music played was pretty sweet, though it got quite weird at times. Hmm but the people there, heh... well... quite open and liberal i must say. Some of the things they did, quite explicit. And there're all these guys walking around looking to pull girls away. Heh. first time seeing this. Guess that's where the clash of cultures is. =)

Well, more photos of that in a while. =)

Happy Birthday, dude!

Thursday, January 19, 2006

i like my hair... it's growing out nicely! =)

All green things come to an end. haha.

Finished my Chem 125 prelab assignment before heading to dinner and I'm back! =) Had a great time today, learnt a lot during religion lecture on how it was really like in Jesus' time. Made me wonder and realize why the Pharisees and the Sadducees could not see the obvious prophecies that Jesus was fulfilling during His time.

According to my professor, the beliefs about the Messiah in the 1st century, among the Jewish circle was that the Messiah("the anointed one") is believed to be an appointed leader of the Jews. As such, God has been providing messiahs for Israel ever since He chose His people. The historical messiahs were believed to be the priests of Israel, and in the 1st century, the Sadducees were in charge. It was believed that the high priests of the Sadducees in the Temple of Jerusalem at that time were the messiahs of Israel. Therefore, any messianic claim by anyone was looked upon by suspicion, and as a challenge/criticism to their own authority (See Sirach chapter 50 and 1 Maccabees 14:4-5).

There were also the future messiahs of Hellenistic Judaism. The hope for good leaders (political or priestly) and the hope for the restoration of the monarchy. In the time of Jesus (early 1st century), the foreign Roman rulers were considered to be the messiah as well. Their political leaders at that time were, in fact, of the Roman empire, but the fact that they were leading Israel, (and probably leading Israel pretty well at that time), they were considered to be messiahs. Roman Emperor Vespasian was announced as the Messiah according to Flavius Josephus, a Jewish historian, just like the Persian king Cyrus. Foreign kings who have contributed to the well-being of Israelites. The Sybilline Oracles 3:652-656 speaks of a King from the East who would come to bring peace and the prophecy was attributed to Vespasian at that time.

The Sadducees did not believe in a messiah where he would be resurrected. However, contrary to what I believed, the Pharisees (another Jewish sect) did believe in the resurrection, and they did believe in an eschatological Messiah through the Psalms of Solomon. However, according to the mainstream Jewish belief at that time, they believed in a human Messiah "son of God". A human being appointed by God just as David was who will be a warrior and who will deliver Israel from the power of her enemies, restoring the Mosaic Law as a result. This "son of God" was believed to be specially chosen by God, and not divine. This must explain why Jesus infuriated the Pharisees when he made claims about His divinity. =) And especially when He was debunking the law. The eschatological Messiah that they believed in, was believed to come after the end of days, to lead Israel out of destruction into a tangible Kingdom of God. For the Pharisees, if you have no kingdom to offer, you are no messiah.

Well, apparently, in the Qumran community at that time, Judaism was fiercely diverse. Fiercely. There were sects of Sadducees, Pharisees, zealots and the Essenes, along with Jews with other variant beliefs. The Jewish messianic tradition of 2 messiahs were prevalent--a Son of Aaron: a high priest who will lead Israel in the world to come; and a Son of David--a king that will lead Israel in the world to come. The Davidic Messiah second to the priestly one.

As such, with a status quo of 2 messianic expectations fulfilled--the idea that they already have a priestly messiah and a kingly one who were leading them--they really had no need for another. In addition, there were chaos at that time with pockets of Jewish zealots claiming themselves to be the Messiah etc, and threatening the Roman authority.

There were a few common ideas among the sects of the Jews one being that the messiah is a man chosen by God, human, not divine. The second being that the Messiah has nothing to do with personal salvation. The Messiah will not be the redeemer of sins. The Messiah will only be the redeemer of Israel and humankind, bringing peace on earth after his arrival. The Messiah is not the judge. Rather, God will judge you and god will judge you based on a Mosaic Torah. In short, they believed that the day of the Messiah is the day of the deliverance of Israel, but it need not be the day of your deliverance.

Well, knowing that that was all they believed in has certainly helped me gain a better understanding of why the Jews did not accept Jesus as their Messiah at that time. I mean, it probably is pretty obvious to us now that we have Scriptural comparison and we find that Jesus fulfils the prophecies of the Old Testament, but it really was fuzzy back then during His time.

One thing that struck me from the lecture: As I mentioned, there were many zealous Jews claiming to be the Messiah and this was what was said:
*****
32 And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him.
33 When they heard this, they were furious and plotted to kill them.
34 Then one in the council stood up, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in respect by all the people, and commanded them to put the apostles outside for a little while.
35
And he said to them: “Men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what you intend to do regarding these men.
36
For some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody. A number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was slain, and all who obeyed him were scattered and came to nothing. 37 After this man, Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of the census, and drew away many people after him. He also perished, and all who obeyed him were dispersed. 38 And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing;
39
but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it—lest you even be found to fight against God.”
*****

If it is of God, it will come to pass, and it will last. =)
One thing I know, once I was blind, now I see.

had a good church service at New Life today.
Pastor John spoke on spiritual revival. part 2 of a 2-part series on it.

Matthew 9
35Jesus traveled through all the cities and villages of that area, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And wherever he went, he healed people of every sort of disease and illness. 36He felt great pity for the crowds that came, because their problems were so great and they didn't know where to go for help. They were like sheep without a shepherd. 37He said to his disciples, "The harvest is so great, but the workers are so few. 38So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send out more workers for his fields."

He spoke about people who are lost, and have no direction. Like a sheep without a shepherd. The harvest is indeed so great, but the workers are so few. There's so much God can offer, if only all knew. If only I knew. If only I start to know.

Well, March 19's sermon for anyone who wants to come to New Life church just to find out more. The UMich dudes and dudettes are all invited! A relevant what-is-it-all-about sermon will be preached specially catered to people who want to find out more. Yep. a precursor.

New Life's offering many spring break trips too. Hmm , tempted. But i've bought my ticket to europe, so i guess next spring break then. =)

the light.

i guess it's that simple folks. I really should be practising what i preach.

Seek first the righteousness of God and all these things shall be added. =) Help me trust in You more.

a breather.

yay! end of the week again! =) and time to recover. =) thanks guys for the tags on my tagboard and all.=) haha.. yeah and i'll try to make my long hair look appropriate.=)

Will be heading to London for spring break! (yeah!). Just bought tix today. Praise God, it went for 519 bucks. haha. thought we'll never see prices these low again. It was 620 on average since a week ago. haha.. i guess, i was meant to go this time haha.=)

will have to draw up an itinerary this time. =) Will mainly meet up with the tons of Singaporeans over there. haha.. the dsta ppl, old rj friends. haha thanks John , will be staying at your place. =) (right?). haha choing! must meet up too. =) I hope the weather will treat me well there. Not that it's been treating me worse over in Ann Arbor. It's awesome! =) haha .. But the weather at Michigan's kinda worrying for meteorologists and environmentalists i guess. hahaha. apparently temperatures at 6-8degrees were unheard of in Jan. Like we're supposed to be in the heart of winter but, NO SNOW! hahaha we're supposed to be in 5-10feet deep in snow (i'm exaggerating) but it's not happening! I don't know if it's an extreme case of global warming or otherwise, but I'M LOVING IT! =) haha 3 cheers and hip hip hooray.

=) Will have work tomorrow. 745am to 10am at the NCRB as equipment room attendant. and then 9-11pm at CCRB as entrance monitor. Most of the Singaporean gang will be heading to a place 20 minutes away for their ski trip. It's Martin Luther King weekend! and there's a holiday on Monday, so there's time to take a breather.

I do hope my New Testament textbook comes soon though, so I can complete my readings on time. Things I plan to do during this long weekend:

(1) MATH 215 written questions to prepare for quiz (dot, cross pdts).
(2) ENGR100: Resume. 2 design ideas for individual proposal to team. Tallest Tower takeaway.
(3) ACABS 122: The Psalms of Solomon. (for: Judaism and thier Messiahs (I): the Human Messiah. The Messiah of the Pharisees and Zealots: the Son of David. The Two Messiahs of the Essenes: the Son of Aaron and the Son of Judah.)
(4) EECS 206: HW #2.
(5) CHEM 125 prelab.
(6) CScope email to Yale and Duke (long overdue).
oh yes those guys interested in College Scope and what we do, visit gateway.cscope.org.
Just a quick update, the Harvard SSA's in our Alliance as well! =) great time for networking. Those interested to sign up, please do at our website. We won't spam, and there will be great opportunities in future to network.

Hmm that is all. Of course, there's always room for procrastination. =) haha. I hope I do get these done though. Always good to get work out of the way so I can read up on other stuff. hmm will be taking EECS 215 and EECS 270 in the spring, so I'll need as much help with logic gates and logic design as i can. (to RAYN!~~)

Alrighty, I guess that's all i'll update for now. Watch Bleach if you guys are bored, I highly recommend it.=)

Till later.

A Tribute to 2005

Okay, after a long break in New York, I am ready to start the new term =)

Well, like I said, here's my take on the year 2005, even as we welcome the new year.

It's been blessed, indeed. The year of my double portion, indeed=) 2005 has seen many ups and downs, but I rejoice in the many sure victories that I have already had.
*******************************************************************************
Isa 61:7 Instead of their shame my people will receive a double portion, and instead of disgrace
they will rejoice in their inheritance;
and so they will inherit a double portion in their land, and everlasting joy will be theirs.
*******************************************************************************
Blessed ATEC, Thailand. First of all, I thank God for my eventual posting as dys4 in 1SIR. Not because it was deemed 'slack', (well, those who have been in 1SIR with me will know that it definitely is not slack. at all. =) ) but because of the wealth of knowledge and experience that I have gathered for myself, as a dys4 rather than a platoon commander(my initial posting). I had become more meticulous, and organized, and definitely more patient. I thank God for having such a disciplined, meticulous boss of an S4 (which can sometimes get me irritated haha..) which gave me really good guidance. Although being 'out-of-action' during the actual ATEC because of the non-establishment of a land link was not what I had expected, I must say I had a very enjoyable experience in Thailand. I thank God for the strength He gave for me during all stages of my NS life. =) I will always remember the times I had planning NDP, and of course, the preparation of ATEC. (one helluva messy logistics job). To all I have had flared up against, I apologize. Job hazards. =)

I thank God for His provision for my trip to Europe as well... that 5.5k well spent. Had such a wonderful time with my companions, touring central europe in 20 days and spending my last week or so in London. Thanks. It had been great fun. Saw so much of provision for the trip that I can only say, thanks. I will always remember the crazy times we had in our little Contiki village huts, the blasted 8 hour bus ride when the bus broke down, Jerry the One-Can Man, the promiscuous Australians, winning 94.50 Euros in a casino in Monaco, our lousy Tuscan dinner, the beautiful beaches of Cannes, the rich culture of Florence and Rome, the exhilarating climb up the Austrian mountains, playing in the snow up the Jungfrau, the Red Light District in Amsterdam, Jon, Jerry and Gabe smiling uncontrollably under their bedsheets after having some space brownies, and of course, Wenzheng's 21 shots of goodness-knows-what crappy wine for his 21st birthday.=) Definitely memories for a lifetime.

Restoration. Of relationships lost. What more can I say? =) Just trusting God that if He means it to be, it'll be.

Thank You for a blessed interim period between army and uni. The constant availability of meaningful relief teaching positions at RI, RGPS and Northbrooks for me, and RGS for Jem (more meaningful for Jem huh. *wink*[and Jem's RGS fan club goes ...] ).

Of course, thank You for the provision of a scholarship to go abroad. And the provision of the strength I will need to complete this course. For redeeming me from 'missing the mark'. For providing me the results that You deserve even though it didnt seem that I was on course for it. Thanks.

Finally, I thank God for all the friends I've made and the wonderful family I have back home. =) Thanks. Thanks mum and dad for all the presents and the encouragement, for the cards and the clothes, for the calls and the chats=) For sorting things back home so that me and Jem would not be worried over here. And my friends for all your support in this land of the free.
********
Well, that's all I want to say. =) It has just been that good. And as I find out more and more about my inheritance, I must say I am excited. For now, I must apologize to anyone who has taken offence to my beliefs and how I express myself. I understand that I might appear judgemental at times and I ask to be forgiven. =) I might seem to have cult-ish beliefs bro, so just remind me time and again if ever you do get offended. Definitely not intended. I guess the experience I've had has etched something so deep (though intangible) in my heart, that it will never be taken away.

Be blessed folks! Cheers to 2006!

Stepped into Ann Arbor and greeted by a familiar sight.
=) Woohoo! the snow melted! =) They say Ann Arbor's weather's a little topsy-turvy this year with heavy snowfall coming 1 month early. Perhaps it'd be spring soon. :P Perhaps.

Helped Roy with his sofa last night too. =) We lugged it from northwood 4, placed it on 2 krogers carts and chugged it all the way to bursley in the cold=) hahaha beat that.

View this clip on Vimeo

and we even stayed to help fix his bed. haha... School's starting tomorrow, and the dorms are getting filled up again. Looking forward!

happy new year to all

A wonderful conclusion to the year of 2005.

We watched the NY ball drop from the comfort of the couch in our living room, and had a game of 'tiu4-tiu4-tiu4'. It's Jack Daniels, Jose, and Smirnoff Green Apple, and the rest was history. Fortunately, I turned in early, and woke up to find a mess. =) But i've got to say, Han was so darn funny last night! =) *what is 5 x 6 and 6 x 6... DRINK!* waa... hilarious. =) Needless to say, he got it hit the hardest last night. I bet he won't remember a thing.

Well, 2005-the year of the Double Portion. It was why this blog was created anyway. I've already seen so much provision and restoration in my life that I am so thankful for the blessings. =) and for being righteous. More on that in a while.

Meanwhile, kudos to Sel for thrashing the competition and emerging as amateur pro champions and bronze medallist for the pro dance championships. *hope i got that right*
